600 full time jobs to be cut by BA
Almost 600 British Airways (BA) employees at Gatwick Airport could lose their jobs or be transferred to another company as part of plans by the airline to cut costs.
BA is proposing to shed 170 customer service and management support jobs and outsource 400 ramp worker roles.
The airline said it had begun consultation with unions over the plans.
The GMB union said the announcement was a “disaster for staff morale”.
Gavin Davies, of the GMB union, said: “We will want to see proper consultations with our members on the way forward.
“GMB members want BA to take this announcement off the table to allow this to happen.”
The Unite union said the plans were “extremely worrying” and called for the airline to guarantee no compulsory redundancies.
‘Meet the challenge’
In a statement BA said its proposals were part of a wide-ranging plan to build a stronger and more cost-competitive business and safeguard jobs for the future.
The jobs it plans to outsource include baggage, de-icing and coaching operations, and the arrivals baggage service.
The airline said it hoped to offer anyone who works on the ramp a role with a new external supplier.

UK job vacancies rose in March recruiters warn
The number of job vacancies in March grew at its fastest rate for eight months.
The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) report also said that permanent staff placements rose for the third month in a row.
But there was a drop in the number of temporary appointments in March.
The REC said many firms had converted temps into permanent staff due to the effect of Agency Worker Regulations.
The regulations, which came into force at the end of last year, gave agency workers equal rights with directly employed staff after 12 weeks in a job.
Although, there were more jobs on offer in March, starting salaries for new permanent staff “stagnated”.
Tom Hadley from the REC said the rise in permanent appointments and vacancy growth was a “positive indication of increasing employer confidence”.
“Recent tax changes announced in the Budget, the Youth Contract and reductions in red tape for businesses, that came into effect this month, should further boost employer confidence and accelerate hiring activity,” he said.
“This month’s data shows a slight decline in appointments of temporary workers.
“This may in part be linked to employer uncertainty over the Agency Worker Regulations, although it could mainly be due to the fact that increasing business confidence has resulted in more employers being prepared to take on permanent hires rather than temporary or contract staff.”
The REC, together with KPMG, compiles its report using information from 400 recruitment and employment consultancies.

Peacocks clothes firm plans to call in administrators
Clothing retailer Peacocks says it intends to call in the administrators after failing to restructure £240 million of company debts.
The company employs more than 400 at its Cardiff HQ and nearly 10,000 more across the UK.
The firm has experienced spectacular growth over the past 15 years, but is saddled with debts dating back to a management buy-out.
However, it said discussions with other potential investors were continuing.
To protect the business whilst discussions with such investors are progressed, the directors of the Peacock Group have filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator”
The spokesman said the existing management of the company remained in place as an administrator had not been appointed.
Chief executive and 30% shareholder Richard Kirk has led the company’s transformation since buying out the Peacock family in the mid-1990s.
Profits grew tenfold in a decade as the business changed from a traditional women’s clothing retailer to a fast-moving high street fashion name, competing with the likes of Primark and Top Shop.
The company has more than 600 stores and concessions in the UK, and 117 stores around the world. Its expansion into Russia and Eastern Europe was particularly successful.
It also bought the Yorkshire-based retailer Bonmarche 10 years ago. The parent company said it would seek a potential buyer for Bonmarche, which includes some 394 stores, but will appoint an administrator in the meantime.
During the fast expansion, the company floated on the stock market but Richard Kirk was unhappy with the share-price the company was getting and led a management buy out, with the backing of two US financial operations and the investment bank Goldman Sachs.
However that deal saddled the company with the debts that are at the centre of the current negotiations.
The latest official results posted by Peacocks, covering the year to April 2010, show the group’s stores made operating profits of £27 million.
However that was reduced to a pre-tax loss of £56 million as a result of £77 million in bank loans and overdrafts.
It is unclear how the stores have done since then.

Past Times goes into administration
Past Times has appointed administrators from KPMG to try to sell the business as a going concern.
The retailer had already closed 46 stores, resulting in 507 redundancies.
The remaining 51 stores will continue to trade for now, although 30 people have been made redundant at its head office and another 37 at its warehouse.
The administrators said the remaining stores would enter a “closing-down mode”, with “significantly discounted stock”.
They added that there would be “an orderly wind-down in the event a going-concern sale cannot be concluded”.
There are 500 employees at the remaining 51 stores.
There are 31 people still employed at the head office in Witney in Oxfordshire and at the warehouse.
“The loss-making business is a casualty of difficult trading conditions for the retail sector, which has seen discretionary spend fall as consumer confidence declined during the last year,” the administrators’ statement said.
Past Times was owned by Epic Private Equity, a firm specialising in “distressed” companies, which bought it out of administration for £7.75m in 2005.
It had announced its intention to call in administrators late last year, but then had to leave at least a 10-day gap before doing so.

RBS to cut 3,500 jobs in investment bank
The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has said it will cut a further 3,500 jobs, with most of them to happen this year.
The cuts are part of a reorganisation and shrinkage of its investment bank.
The losses, which will be split between its UK and international offices, come on top of 2,000 cuts announced earlier.
A further 950 jobs are also to go at Irish subsidiary Ulster Bank, split between 350 in Northern Ireland and 600 in the Irish Republic.
RBS’ “wholesale banking” business, which provides services to large clients including investment banking services, will be split into separate “markets” and “international banking” divisions.
The new markets division – which comprises RBS’ main trading activities – will focus on the bank’s traditional strengths of debt, currency and money markets, the bank said in its statement.
The international banking division will provide services for the bank’s biggest clients.
These will include corporate advisory services transferred from its investment bank – such as helping major companies borrow money by issuing bonds – as well as cash management and payments services.
The bank has already shed some 30,000 employees over the last two years, 22,000 of them in the UK.
For a bank that has shed 30,000 jobs over the past couple of years, a further 3,500 departures may not seem massive”
The bank said that it planned to close or sell off other business lines, such as those dealing with shares and stock markets, as well as its business advising companies on mergers and acquisitions.
It is also looking to dispose of its corporate brokerage, Hoare Govett.
The bank is now 82%-owned by the UK government after labour nationalised the bank and injected £45.5bn of taxpayers’ money.

Soft drink maker Sangs in administration
The soft drink manufacturer Sangs has gone into administration.
It made and distributed fizzy drinks, juices and water, including the MacB flavoured water brand.
Sangs also operated a wholesale delivery business from its headquarters in Aberdeenshire and a distribution centre in South Lanarkshire.
The administrators, Zolfo Cooper, said they would explore all possible options, including the sale of the business as a going concern.
Sangs is based at Macduff and employs about 60 workers.
Regional soft-drink makers like Sangs have declined against stiff competition from major players in the market, such as Coca Cola and, in Scotland, Barr’s Irn Bru.
Elizabeth Mackay, a partner at Zolfo Cooper, said: “Sangs has established a significant presence across Scotland and with its rich history, strong underlying core business and the growing Macb brand, we believe it is an attractive proposition for a range of potential buyers.
“We will continue to trade the business and welcome expressions of interest from third parties.”
